Nootka Sound Fishing Report
July 25th, 2011

Nootka Sound has so shown incredible returns of chinook and coho salmon this season. It is likely a combined result of the above average rainfall and temperature of water, along with salmon enhancement projects by Conuma Hatchery and the Nootka Sound Watershed Society. It's too early to tell what August and September will be like, but if the past few weeks are any indication, fisherman in Nootka Sound can look forward to a lot of fun!

What tackle and depth to use this season?

An extensive review on popular tackle this season will be available in September. To get you started for your August fishing trip, take a look at what we found successful this July.

We found Purple Haze Hootchies to be our lure of choice with good reason. One morning we caught and succesfully released over a dozen salmon using this lure, combined with an Oki Purple/Gold and Betsy flasher. We also had success with glow squirts, copcar coyote spoons and for those who use bait, the mint tulip head was also fantastic.

There has also been reports of halibut caught inside, so if you can't get to your offshore hole, try experimenting some potential spots in Tlupana Inlet. Maybe you'll get lucky?

Finding the right depth is always difficult, especially if you see others around you catching fish. So far this year, our popular depths have been 45, 55, 75, 80 feet.
